Well, April 15 has come and gone and the world did not end. For my wife, who is a certified public accountant, this is her busiest time of the year. By now she is somewhat “burnt out” so we usually take a vacation. But instead of going on a cruise, this year we decided to go to our property in Mississippi early. We usually spend our summers their camping. My agreement with my bride was that I will tolerate her country club, society existence for part of the year, but I need at least 3-4 months in the country away from the fool’s of civilized life. So as she was cracking the whip over her employees at the office, I set about the logistical process of getting ready for the annual migration. I have made war plans that were less complicated, but in my obsessive-compulsive way, it just had to be right. We departed Charleston, I was driving my truck pulling our 37’ fifth wheel camper, and she was driving her Cadillac pulling a small trailer with her golf cart on it. We were in no hurry so we stopped at Fort Benning to visit with friends and spend the night. The Officer’s Club is still nice and I avoided any political discussions, so we had a great time. Departing the next morning, I had her new puppy in the truck with me. As we were going down the inter-state, acute distress set in. It seems there is this strange malady that affects dogs when they travel, because from this innocent looking puppy came the most foulest odor that it caused my eyes to water. This continued for a bit, so I did the only thing a caring husband could do. I pulled into a rest stop and told my wife that the puppy was whining for her. She gladly took the puppy and off we went. When we stopped for fuel, I noticed she had all the windows rolled down and the vent blowing on full. Of course, I said nothing. My deception was complete. The remainder of the trip was uneventful, as far as I know. After getting everything hooked up, I set up the grill and prepared a lovely dinner of steak and shrimp. And thus we begin again our country life. On the Gulf Coast, near the casinos and superb fishing. ……………………..jim |
